#SeptemberWhole30
It’s been a really good summer. Maybe too good. We took a 9 day Disney Cruise to Alaska. And, we spent 2 days in Vancouver before sailing. We still spent 5 weeks at our seasonal Adirondack cabin. And, we ate recklessly. But, we also enjoyed ourselves. Now school is back in session so we’re looking at it just like the New Year and we’re starting a Whole30 Fall Reboot.
Whole30 Fall Reboot
Back to school is usually a good time for families to reset routines. I wrote about this last fall in Back to School Resolutions. This year we’re going back to a Whole30 diet which we first did last January (see Going Whole30) after reading It Starts with Food.
Whole30 is an elimination diet which cuts all alcohol, grains, sugar (including “natural sugar” like honey and real maple syrup), soy and dairy. And it focuses on eating real food which is actually a foundation of The Semiconservative Granola Girl and Close to Home Living.
When we did our last Whole30, we felt great, ate well (see A Week of Whole30 Meals) and lost 25 pounds each. I even increased the number of laps I was swimming and gained the confidence to participate in Women Swimming for Hospicare a 1.2 mile swim across Cayuga Lake (Finger Lakes area of New York, near Ithaca.)
And, during the rest of the school year, I maintained a number of those healthier habits picked up during that month. And then summer hit. The cruise came with all that cruise food. I swore we were going to do a Whole30 reset after the cruise in preparation for the swim, but classic summer salads, wine and campfires.
So, now here we are. School started for the adults last Tuesday and for the kids on Thursday. We started our Whole30 Fall Reboot yesterday because we need to squeeze it in between two craft shows for my husband’s side business (The Boxery. If you are local to Western New York check us out at the Letchworth Arts and Craft Festival Columbus Day Weekend).
A Look at Our Whole30 Fall Reboot
September and October are super busy months for us. We have two craft fairs, homework (which includes a half hour of reading for each kid plus 20 minutes of instrument practice for each child), swim team practice twice a week and violin lessons for The Boy. (Sunshine starts clarinet at school this fall.) So this means I don’t really have time to go to the grocery store, but the truth is, I don’t really have to. I have a well stocked freezer full of venison that we need to use before this year’s harvest.
Additionally, we have salmon from our Alaska trip, local pork and chicken bought on sale. I also have a well stocked pantry. In other words, I have been gearing up for this. I read a blog post by Jordan F Page of Fun Free or Cheap where she talks about Shelf Cooking: planning your meals from what you have rather than planning your grocery list by what you want to make. She even has a current challenge going #Shelftember. She is planning to spend only $25 each week on groceries for the month of September, essentially only purchasing fresh stuff. I thought what if I put my own spin: no grocery store for at least two weeks. Farm stand shopping only.
You heard that right. Whole30, Shelf Cooking and eating locally sourced produce. Am I crazy? Maybe but I hope you will follow along and share your own experience with Whole30, #shelftember and/or eating local. You can follow our progress on SeptemberWhole30 and #shelftember on by following me on Instagram @semiconservativegranolagirl.
Oh, and there are lots of great Whole30 recipes on the Whole30 Index Page. So, let me know how you are progressing on your September Whole30 or with your Shelftember. I would love to hear suggestions and advice.
