It is so easy to go to the grocery store and spend too much money. If you’ve read my post on Why Meal Planning is a Must for Working Moms, you know that I really believe in the meal planning process as a way to save money. However, some weeks, it just doesn’t happen which I why I came up with the Five Item Challenge.

Before I stared meal planning, I was a four-day a week (minimum) grocery shopper. I would stop on Monday and spend $75, on Wednesday and spend $50, on Thursday, another $50. By the end of the week, I would have spent $300 and still not be able to put a meal together. At the beginning of last school year (2015), I started really working on making a plan, grocery shopping on Sunday morning and sticking to it as best I could.
Because life is unpredictable and our extracurriculars sometimes get in the way, I don’t always manage our weekly shopping trip. However, I’ve worked on a plan for that too. (See How to Meal Plan When You Don’t Have Time to Shop). One solution is my Five Item Challenge.
What is the Five Item Challenge?
Simply make a plan when you go into the store: I will only purchase five items. Then, stick to it. It’s really liberating. There are more benefits than you even realize:
- Money. You spend less because you are only buying what you really need.
- Time. A woman on a mission is quicker than one who meanders.
- Lines. The express lane is open to you. In fact, any lane is open to you. As a result of only having a few things in your basket or small cart, you can jump in the lane that seems like it will move the quickest. Personally, I usually pick my favorite cashier (Hi Marva!).
How to Make the Five Item Challenge Work:
- Purpose. Know why you are going to the store. Have a list (physical or mental) and then only buy those items.
- Focus. Stay true to your purpose. Don’t be lured by end caps, sales or lawn furniture. Stick to your list.
- Basket. Grab the hand basket or if you need to, a small cart. The less room you have to fill, the easier it will be to not buy extra.
As a teacher, I work with other moms and other practical people. Oh and we’re all kitchen people; we like to cook (and unfortunately, eat). We’ve also talked about how easy it is to fall into that four-day (or seven-day) a week shopping thing. I mentioned my Five Item Challenge in passing one day and recently, one of the girls said, “Hey, I tried your Five Item Challenge, and it worked.”
Give it a try. It certainly can’t hurt. On the night that you have your heart set on a certain meal, but you are missing two ingredients and need milk, tell yourself, “I am only going to buy these five (three/seven) items.” You’ll surprise yourself the first time. Then you’ll become a believer.
