We love homemade dressing. All sorts of buttermilk dressings: Ranch, Buttermilk Chive, Buttermilk Bacon Chive, Italian. But a long time family favorite is Russian Dressing. This is a great one to whip up when you don’t have any buttermilk. It is just a few ingredients and super quick. We love this with Venison Cheeseburger Salad. Nothing says love like making homemade dressing. And this one is so easy.
In fact, one of my fondest childhood memories is making a dip similar to this with my Aunt Vicki. (Hi, Aunt Vicki!) We were visiting their house which is in another state, so it was a rare visit. I think I was around Sunshine’s age (8 or 9) as I’m pretty sure we were there for my cousin’s Christening, and I helped her to make the mayo-ketchup dip. The next part of the story, I don’t actually remember, but has been filled in by my aunt in more recent years. Apparently, she asked me to test it and I told her I thought it need more ketchup. She pretended to put it in and we mixed some more. Again, I sampled. “Yes, that’s perfect.” I had no idea that it was exactly the same! I have definitely used this trick with my own kids!
Okay, so when I say we are making Russian Dressing, a question I often get is: how is it different from Thousand Island? The basic difference seems to be pickles or relish. Thousand Island dressing has them, Russian dressing does not. Apparently, Russian Dressing is also supposed to have a little more spice in it. However, ours does not actually have any spice added. Instead, it is simply four ingredients that you probably have in your fridge or on the pantry shelf.

This is more-or-less my mother-in-law’s recipe. Usually, I leave it to my husband to make. We worked out together what the measurements should be as this is really one of those recipes that the McLaughlins make “by feel.”
The basic ingredients are mayonnaise, ketchup, lemon juice and the secret ingredient. The secret ingredient? Worcester sauce. Who knew, right? Like all of our dressings, I start by measuring the mayonnaise into a 2 cup glass measuring cup. I add the ketchup on top. Then, I measure the lemon juice and Worcester, and mix it with my favorite flat whisk. It couldn’t be easier.
This is great on top of salad and as a dip. My mother-in-law serves it with steamed asparagus. So give it try on your salad tonight.
