Summer Reading season is almost upon us and as we’re mostly still finishing up our May books, it’s time to start looking ahead to our summer reading selections.

Looking ahead to Summer Reading
I’m looking forward to reading To the Bright Edge of the World by Eowyn Ivey . I read her Pulitzer nominated first novel, Snow Child, a few years ago. And, I loved it! It’s the story of a childless couple who are homesteaders in Alaska. One evening, they build a child out of snow. Shortly after, they find an actual child. The magical realism is stunning. It is such a beautifully written story of family and love.
I’m really interested to see where Ivey’s new book goes. It also takes place (in part) in Alaska and gets great reviews.
Family Reading
As a family, we are looking forward to reading a few new acquisitions. Doreen Cronin of Click, Clack Moo and Diary of a Worm fame has new chapter books called The Chicken Squad. We just got the first three books which includes the First Misadventure, The Case of the Weird Blue Chicken and Into the Wild. Sometimes, The Boy doesn’t have the attention for chapter books; but he loved Diva and Flea by Mo Willems, so I hope that these are his speed.
We also just learned about a series called the Adirondack Kids which his teacher has been reading to his class. We have a cabin on Lake Champlain which is in Adirondack Park and this is a topic that is particularly interesting to The Boy. So, it seems like a perfect addition. Our kids will need to continue reading for school (and Mommy and Daddy) over the summer, so we should need quite a few books to keep us going. We are going to grab the first few books in the series including Adirondack Kids, Rescue on Bald Mountain and The Lost Lighthouse.
Sunshine’s Summer Reading
As we finish reading Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban, we are going to take a little break from Harry. Sunshine has several series books to read including the fourth book (Going Places) in the Piper Green and the Fairy Tree and the fourth Princess in Black book which is called The Princess in Black Take a Vacation. The Piper Green Books are cute. Piper lives on an island off the coast of Maine. Instead of taking a school bus to get to school, she must ride a lobster boat. There is a mysterious tree in her yard that leave her gifts and those gifts lead to adventure. The Princess in Black is the secret identity of Prince Magnolia. Obviously, she uses her secret identity to save the day.
And, a note on June reading, Sunshine currently loving Dory Fantasmagory which is also a series, so I imagine we will end up reading the others too.
