My father-in-law often asks me how my novel is coming. In his mind, all English teachers are hoping the write the great American novel. In my late twenties, I was really into retold fairy tales like Jane Yolen’s Briar Rose and I thought I might give it a go, but it never really went anywhere and I have never given writing professionally any real consideration since.
So why am I here now? Venison. As part of our “living close to home” lifestyle, we eat it often, and while I can find plenty of ideas for how to prepare it, there doesn’t really seem to be one go to place. I mean, Pinterest, yes, but what about a blog? I wanted a place that I could go to get venison and other locavore recipes and ideas in one place. My husband told me I should just write my own blog and here we are: a lifestyle blog called The Semiconservative Granola Girl.
You can look forward to recipes about venison, but also how to preserve the harvest; words about family living and balancing motherhood with work; memory keeping and hopefully a sewing project or two.
But I also though you should know about a few conscious decisions my husband and I have made about this blog:
- This is a business, but it is a part-time venture. My other two jobs (the one that actually pays the bills and motherhood) come first. That being said, I am figuring out ways to schedule time for writing, publishing, etc. Right now, I am planning on one post a week, maybe more, hopefully not less.
- No Facebook. I have never been on Facebook. I want to keep it that way. I am going to make this work without it. I am fundamentally a private person. I have never wanted to advertise the minutia of my everyday life on the internet. I am, however, on Pinterest and Instagram and you can follow me there.
- Our kids are not old enough to make that same decision for themselves, so we are not using their names or their faces.
I hope that you will join me in this adventure.
