We read a lot in our house. The kids are each required to read for a half hour of homework, but it is the rare day that they don’t read more. We also obsess about reading to them. (We’re the kind of parents who read to the baby in the belly.)

If you’re here because you’re a working mom like me, you probably like to hear what other people are reading to and with their kids. So here’s what we’re reading:
I am reading
… the current issue of Mary Jane’s Farm Magazine and Reading the Silver Screen by Thomas C Foster (who is also the author of How to Read Literature Like a Professor and How to Read Novels Like a Professor, both books I use in my classroom). Also, The Little White Book (which are Easter Prayer Reflections for Catholics put out by the Diocese of Saginaw. This is not an affiliate link, just something I really enjoy and thought I worth sharing for the Catholics out there.)
Jim
… is reading Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. It’s really dense, so it’s been a slow go, but he is finding it interesting and worth it. (Don’t be surprised if he’s still reading it in June because it is also long!)
Sunshine (who is 8 tomorrow)
… is reading Fox in Love and Fox on the Job by James Marshall and Mr. Putter and Tabby Bake a Cake by Cynthia Rylant. Also There’s No Such Thing as a Dragon (see my post about Kids and Chores for a little of her insight on this one). Together we’re reading Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Sometimes I read to her/them, sometimes we take turns. We already read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (We just got the illustrated version of this–it is beautiful!) and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets).
The Boy (who is 5)
… is really into Mark Teague right now, so anything LaRue the Dog–LaRue for Mayor, LaRue Across America, and Detective LaRue. And Mother Bruce and Hotel Bruce by Ryan T. Higgins.
I love great kids literature and would love to hear what you are reading with your kids (or for yourself), so leave us a comment below! I hope that these suggestions inspire you to read with your kids too.
