I am by no means an organization guru. But, as a Working Mom, if I find something that works, I want to share so I can help my working mom friends out in the interwebs. Our towel cupboard used to be a disaster. Then, I saw a pin that showed a linen closet with the towels rolled instead of folded. Brilliant. Our towel cupboard has never been neater. Rolled towels: the ticket to linen closet organization.
Linen Closet Organization
Before
Our towel cupboard in our main bathroom was always a mess. The towels never laid flat. If you wanted the second towel down the top towel came with it making causing everything to go askew. When things were not neat, the door wouldn’t shut. I saw a pin on Pinterest that showed rolled towels. (Apparently, I just filed the picture in my brain because I can’t find the pin on any of my boards to give credit.) It certainly couldn’t hurt to give it a shot. So about a year ago, I took all the towels out of the drawers, washed a few of the ones on the bottom to freshen them up. Then, I rolled them. I did the same with all the hand towels and wash cloths.
After
A year later, I am so happy with the decision that I just did the same project at our Adirondack cabin. It is so much easier for the towels to stay neat when they are rolled. Rolled towels also make it easier to pull just the towel you want because more than one towel is on top. Linen closet organization at its finest and easiest.
How to Roll Your Towels
It seems like a simple idea, but I thought it might be helpful to show you a step-by-step to rolling towels. Or at least how I like to do it.
Fold the towel in half lengthwise.
Fold it in half again in the other direction.
Stagger your ends and begin rolling at the open end. That way, your open ends will be tucked in and your folded side will be out.
Begin to roll at the open end toward the folded end.
Neat and Done
Purge
As you are going through your towels, it is the perfect time to get rid of a few. The linen closet at the cabin was full of thin, worn towels that no longer fit our needs. As part of my linen closet organization, I used it as the opportunity to get rid of a few. I filled most of a garbage bag and took it to a nearby church that reuses and recycles textiles including clothing, sheets and towels. Let me tell you Friends, it felt good to declutter.
Try It
After a little over a year, I have now converted every space we have that stores towels and wash clothes to a rolled space. In the spring, I did the two drawers in the kitchen that house hand towels and wash cloths/cleaning cloths. And, the cabin completes the project. Seriously, give it a try. You’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner.
