Today is day 12 of the 25 days of Christmas Activities to do with your family. And on the 12th of Christmas, my true love gave me some gingerbread houses! Who doesn’t love to decorate with candy? So let’s make gingerbread houses.
Our kids had several opportunities to make gingerbread houses last year. Both children made them in their after school program. And, each child made gingerbread houses with their classes in school. But I think the most fun was when they did not have to compete with other kids for the candy or the help.
Make Gingerbread Houses
I bought the houses as kits from the grocery store. I actually selected the Village Kit because that way each kid could do several. It was a great family activity and everyone got involved. A word of warning on kits: a few years ago one of my co-workers made gingerbread houses from kits and thought it would be a good idea to get the pre-assembled house. Unfortunately, it was broken when he took it out the box, so it ended up looking like it has survived a hurricane or a tornado.
Of course, the kit came with candies for decorating, but I added to it by going to the bulk food section and getting m&m’s and other assorted candies to add to the festivities. And, those candies had added benefit of being fresh and more edible because, of course, half the fun of decorating gingerbread house is eating candy while you’re doing it.
