I met my husband on an online dating site. A little over ten years ago, I advertised my self as a “semi-conservative granola girl” on an online dating site. He apparently thought that might be “his type.” At the time, I meant that I had some conservative political leanings, but mostly I was a wholesome woman who liked the outdoors and camping, had attempted container gardening on my porch and attended folk festivals.
Over the last ten years, that moniker has evolved: my husband and I purchased an old farmhouse built in the 1860s on about 16-acres of land. I have come to be a conservative in the sense of the dictionary definition: someone disposed to preserve or restore traditional ways; however, the ‘semi-” part is still there because, let’s face, sometimes newer is better. Around here, we raise chickens and bees, tap maple trees, preserve the harvest, do things by hand and homemade. And all this happens around working full time as a high school English teacher and mothering two school age children.
